the scenes, but as for publicly right now, melis melissa, the white house is not talking. president obama is basically launching this public campaign to pressure republicans. president obama came out on friday and urged them to get behind his plans. again today he sat down with david gregory, of course, during that exclusive interview on "meet the press" and urged republicans to act saying that it appears all they are interested in is protecting taxes for wealthy americans. republicans, by the way, lashed out at those comments saying the president seems more interested in placing blame instead of actually leading, but that at this point in time seems to be president obama's strategy to some extent, publicly pressuring republicans to act and to move on these negotiations. so that is where this stands right now. the white house monitoring everything that's going on the hill quite closely, but i can tell you, melissa, that there is a sense of optimism that is waning here at the white house. you can sense that when you talk to the officials here. >> well, the eternal optimist. vice president

right, t.j., president obama has been talking about this back-up plan. he's using the power of his bully pulpit to pressure congress to get something done. the basic message is, if they can't come up with a compromise, which is what leaders reid and mcconnell are working on now, they should at least put his proposal up for a vote. his proposal would include a number of things including extended the bush era tax cuts letting the tax cuts expire for the wealthiest americans. that is a big sticking point for americans. also extending on unemployment. here is what president obama had to say on that point on "meet the press." take a listen. >> i was modestly optimistic yesterday but we don't yet see an agreement. now the pressure is on congress to produce. if they don't, what i have said is that in the senate, we should go ahead and introduce legislation that would make sure middle class taxes stay where they are. there should be an up and down vote. everybody should have the right to vote on it. if republicans don't like it, vote no. i think there's a majority support to make sure they are h

on entitlement reform on spending cuts. >> well, that's right. president obama believed and the democrats believe they have a mandate after the election. now, a mandate, you know, depends what you call a mandate. the election was not really close, but it wasn't also a grand slam for the democrats either. so there's a real difference in who -- what the mandate is here. and democrats don't feel they need to compromise. i think they think if we go over the fiscal cliff, they will have even stronger negotiating power. that remains to be seen because oftentimes when taxes go up and there is something that hits the economy really hard and puts it into a tailspin, it's the president who takes the blame. so i think even the president is wondering who's going to foot the blame for this one. but at this point i think the democrats feel they have the upper hand at this moment. if they hold tight, they will force the republicans to capitulate. i don't see that happening. i think both sides are really going to have to give in before we get a final deal. jon: so we'll have to see, you know, which side wins the

is getting pelted from the left and the right, man without a country. are you surprised that the obama administration hasn't stepped up the reference to sort of shield him a little bit, beings he's for all intents and purposes the nominee for the defense secretary? >> the administration has done everything they can. chuck hagel is like a man, who was like susan rice, not nominated for anything. susan rice took a pelting for a job she was not officially nominated for. chuck hagel is someone who hasn't been nominated for secretary of defense but is someone who is rumored to be that person. i think we saw an indication of what the administration was doing to, in a way to protect hagel, and i'm thinking of specifically the criticisms of hagel and what he had said during the whole "don't ask, don't tell" fight and things that -- i'm sorry, about the nomination of jim hormel to be ambassador to luxembourg back in the '90s. he said the ambassador was openly aggressively homosexual. hagel took a pummelling for a few hours, few days, then miraculously, there was an apology from chuck hagel. the

at some point on the fiscal stuff with obama and expose him or herself to cries of disloyalty on the right and any republican speaker will have to at some point deal with the debt ceiling which will come up in a more or so. is it possible for anybody to really be an effective republican house speaker? >> i don't envy the job but john boehner is a survivor. people forget that he had been on the leadership track rising up through the ranks and got derailed several years ago and he was able to come back. i remember seeing him at a republican event in the 'fwhooirnts in connecticut at a congressional race. he was -- he spent a decade and he may have spent two decades traveling around the country to competitive districts. he has a lot of personal relationships within the caucus even though there's a lot of new members. this is a real leadership test in navigating the fiscal cliff. we saw the debt ceiling debate a year and a half ago. that was a political disaster. a real tough position for john boehner. he had all the freshmen and many of them tea-part backed members that didn't want to comprom

than five days to go before falls right off the fiscal cliff. the senate back in session today and it's the first time the senate or house has met for business between christmas and new year's in more than four decades. president obama cut his hawaii trip short arriving in washington early today. for now, the house of representatives is not in session but we've learned those lawmakers are set to return this weekend. today the senate majority leader, harry reid, says we've just about run out of time. >> if we go over the cliff, and that's where we're headed, mr. president, the house of representatives as we speak with four days left after today before the first of the year, aren't here with the speaker having told them they'll give them 48 hours notice. i can't imagine their consciences, out wherever they are around the country and we're here trying to get something done. >> we're awaiting reaction from the senate minority leader, mitch mcconnell. when that happens we'll go live to the senate floor but a spokesman for john boehner says senator reid should talk less and legislate more.

to spin it. i think doug is absolutely right that president obama has won on this, i think very short-term battle with respect to the tax cuts. however, the bigger issue that we are not discussing enough, which i think this whole debate should have centered around, is not the g.o.p. tax cuts, but in fact, the spending situation. so now we are almost at the fiscal cliff, it's the end of the year. but unfortunately, shannon, we are going to turn around, the end of february, and there is a bigger issue we are going to have to deal with, in terms of the debt. so i agree, i think president obama may have won the short-term battle. but i don't think he's going to win on this -- on the debt situation because that is when there is going to be absolute no negotiation on how much -- on what spending we do. it is going to be how much spending cuts that we are going to make because we are really at the point of no return, with respect to our debt. >> when you break out some of the individual leader who is are playing a part in this fiscal cliff negotiation, this is the latest gallup polling aroun
